The runes are divided into three groups of eight runes. The groups are called Aetts or aettir, the Norse word for the number 8. The third group are called Tyr's runes. Tyr is the war and sky god. He sacrifices his hand to bind the wolf Fenrir and prevent Ranarok, the end of the world. He maintains balance and harmony.
