What I always notice first on the Devil card in the tarot is that the chains holding the people are not locked. It is the essence of this card - the Devil is your own choice. You are choosing to be shackled, whether by addiction or a situation you don't want to release. Even though I realize that some addictions are hard to get rid of, there is a way out. This is evident in the symbolism of the small window with the beautiful landscape peeking through.

Symbolism

  • Dark background: Black, dark, and depressing, it conveys a threat, showcasing the negative aspects of the card.
  • Chains: Restraining, but the people are not held by them; they are held back by their own choice.
  • Treasure chest: Represents wealth and/or desire, but people cannot take it with them; they are held back by it. Despite seeing a way out, they are hindered by the treasure.
  • Small window out: Reveals a glimpse of the outside world with green grass and beautiful rounded mountains, signifying opportunity and good things. However, individuals are not taking advantage of it at the moment, preferring to stay in the cave if they cannot take the treasure with them.

Meaning

  • Self-imposed harm, such as addiction to alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, or being obsessed with something/someone.
  • Doing it to yourself.
  • Self-imposed limitations.
