Nehalennia is a powerful and lesser-known goddess with deep roots in both Dutch and British traditions, associated with the sea, protection, and abundance. Worship of Nehalennia was especially strong among the seafaring peoples along the coasts of what is now the Netherlands and England. She is often depicted with symbols of the sea and trade, such as a ship's helm, and symbols of abundance, like a cornucopia.
Nehalennia was primarily worshipped by the Batavi and Frisians, tribes living along the coasts of the Netherlands. She is known as the goddess of the sea and the protector of travelers and sailors, ensuring safe passage across treacherous waters. Many of her altars were found along the Dutch coast, particularly near Colijnsplaat in Zeeland, where sailors would offer thanks or pray for safety before embarking on dangerous sea voyages, particularly between the Netherlands and Britain. Her role as a protector of sailors and traders highlights her importance in maintaining the economic and cultural connection between these lands.
Nehalennia’s influence extended to the shores of England, as evidenced by Roman inscriptions and dedications made by merchants and sailors traveling between these two regions. Her role as a goddess of the sea and travel made her a protector of those navigating the waters between the two lands, linking the cultures of the North Sea.
In my own spiritual practice, I called upon Nehalennia during a herfst equinox ritual in the Netherlands at Het Kruidenrijk. The energy of the season, focused on harvest, protection, and transition, and the presence of the keeper of the stones from Avebury, England made it a fitting time to invoke her. My invocation was a request for her blessings of abundance and guidance, as well as a request for protection over our ritual space. It was a powerful and grounding experience, especially given Nehalennia’s deep connection to this land. Here is how I invoked her:
Godin Nehalenia
Welcome, Nehalennia, guider of ships,
Goddess of abundance and protection,
Connector of lands and the sea.
Bless this place, bless our harvest,
Connect us here today in this place,
Protect and guide our ritual.
Today, Nehalennia is often invoked in rituals related to protection, abundance, and travel, particularly for those living near or connected to the sea. Her role as a bridge between lands, as well as her symbolism of abundance and trade, continues to resonate with those looking to honor the cycles of nature and the sea's importance in life and sustenance.
